The Dow Jones Industrial Average was retreating steadily midday Thursday, pulling back firmly from its climb toward a record high, with its present decline setting the stage for its worst drop on Halloween in eight years, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

The Dow was down 0.8%, or 206 points, at 26,981. The S&P 500 index was off 0.6% at 3,028 and the benchmark of small-capitalization stocks, the Russell 2000 index down 0.9% at 1,558, also was on pace for its worst Halloween decline since 2011. Stocks have been trending lower after a report indicated that Chinese officials harbor doubts that President Donald Trump will be able to strike a substantive trade agreement to end the dispute between the world's largest economies.
