U.S. stocks opened higher on Monday after President Donald Trump said Beijing was interested in going back to the negotiating table, bolstering hopes for an easing of trade tensions.
The S&P 500 rose 0.8% to 2,870. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 276 points, or 1%, to around 25,905. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 1% to 7,830.
Stocks were slammed Friday after Trump reacted angrily to China's decision to announce retaliatory import levies against the U.S. After Friday's close, Trump announced higher tariffs on Chinese imports.
Stocks rebounded on Monday as Trump said U.S. officials had received two "very good calls" from Beijing. Despite trade uncertainty, business investment spending by U.S. companies came in stronger than expected, with durable goods orders rising 2.1% in July.
