U.S. stock benchmarks on Monday kicked off the week's action on a downbeat note, amid lingering worries over U.S.-China trade tensions and unrest in Hong Kong and elsewhere.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 204 points, or 0.8%, to 26,078, the S&P 500 index declined 0.6% at 2,900, while the Nasdaq Composite Index retreated 0.6% at 7,907.
Wall Street investors were monitoring events in Hong Kong, where authorities canceled more than 100 flights as thousands of demonstrators thronged the city's airport to protest police for their handling of this summer's protests.
Meanwhile, markets in Argentina and Italy were being watched as political uncertainty in those countries added to worries about the global economy and the possibility that exogenous factors could contribute to weakness in markets.
