European markets open lower after Fed cools rate cut hopes

European stocks opened lower Wednesday after U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell tempered expectations of an imminent cut to interest rates.
The pan-European Stoxx 600 fell 0.3% at the opening bell, healthcare stocks leading the losses with a 0.6% decline while oil and gas gained 0.4% as only a handful of sectors entered positive territory.
Investors worldwide are also awaiting the impending meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday at the G-20 summit in Osaka, in the hope that the world™s two largest economies will at least agree a ceasefire on escalating trade tariffs.
