U.S. stock benchmarks climbed Monday morning, as investors watched a new round of negotiations between the U.S. and China on resolve tariff disagreements.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 80 points, or 0.3%, at 25,184, the S&P 500 index advanced 0.3% at 2,715, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.4% at 7,330. Tariff negotiations between Washington and Beijing begin in earnest later in the week, led by U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Meanwhile, investors were attuned to the possibility of another partial government shutdown beginning after Friday, amid signs that Democrats and Republicans remain at loggerheads over President Donald Trump's demand to obtain funds for a U.S.-Mexico border wall.
