U.S. stocks open mixed as strong earnings struggle to counter growth concerns

U.S. stocks open mixed on Thursday after a wave of better-than-expected corporate earnings was balanced against fears around softening global economic conditions.
The S&P 500 was off 0.1% to 2,639. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 27 points, or 0.1%, to 24,576. The Nasdaq Composite was up 0.2% to 7,026, according to FactSet data.
Investors enjoyed another round of robust earnings from the likes ofd American Airlines Group Inc. But signs of continued profit growth in the U.S. was offset by the renewed attention to the global economic slowdown after ECB President Mario Draghi said that the balance of risks surrounding the eurozone economic outlook had moved to the downside, after saying the risks were balanced in December.
Also, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the U.S. was "miles and miles" away from a trade agreement with China.
