U.S. stocks ended sharply lower Thursday as key equity benchmarks struggled to gain traction after the Federal Reserve's hiking plans helped dampen investor optimism.
The S&P 500 finished lower by 1.6% to around 2,467, based on preliminary numbers. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 464 points, or 2%, to end around 22,860. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 1.6% to 6,528. All three stock indexes carved out fresh 52-week closing lows.
With earnings season a few weeks away, investors are preoccupied by the Fed's hiking intentions and plans to keep the central bank's balance-sheet reduction on "autopilot." The Fed hiked the federal-funds rate by 25 basis points to a range of 2.25% to 2.5% on Wednesday, marking its fourth interest-rate increase of the year. In the company front, shares of Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. fell around 5% after it reported its fiscal first-quarter revenues came below expectations.
