U.S. stock opened mostly flat on Friday as a closely watched labor-market report showed a weaker-than-estimated increase in jobs for July, though the rate of unemployment ticked lower and revisions to prior months underlined a jobs market that remains healthy.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened 33 points, or about 0.1%, higher at 25,359, the S&P 500 index edged up by 0.1% at 2,831, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.3% to reach 7,822, with investors still clinging to some optimism about the technology and internet-related sector after Apple Inc. on Thursday became the first U.S. publicly traded company to surpass $1 trillion in market value.
For the week, the Dow is on track to post a lost of 0.5%, the S&P 500 is poised for a gain of 0.4%, while the Nasdaq is set for a weekly return 0.8%, as of Thursday's close. The Labor Department on Friday showed U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose 157,000 in July, less than the 195,000 that economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected. The unemployment rate ticked down to 3.9% from 4% in the prior month and average hourly wages rose 0.3%, versus a forecast for a gain of 0.2%.
