U.S. stock-market indexes ended mostly lower on Wednesday as the Federal Reserve left the key interest rate unchanged, but upgraded its view on the economy.
The change in the language of the statement affirms that the central bank is likely to raise rates at its next policy meeting. Fresh worries over the U.S.-China trade friction also contributed to weakness in the market. Meanwhile, upbeat results from Apple Inc buoyed the Nasdaq Composite, which finished with modest gains. The S&P 500 was 2.93 points, or 0.1%, lower to 2,813.36.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 81.37 points, or 0.3%, lower to 25,333.82. The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 35.50 points, or, 0.5%, to 7,707.29. Among the biggest gainers on the S&P 500, shares of Apple Inc. rallied nearly 6% after the company's better-than-expected earnings.
