Japanese shares gained after the Topix index finished August with its first monthly loss in five months, as the yen retreated before key U.S. jobs data due later Friday.
Topix added 0.1% to 1,619.59 at the close in Tokyo, this index fell 0.1% in August, its first monthly decline since March. Nikkei 225 closed 0.2% higher at 19,691.47. Yen weakened 0.1% to 110.11 per dollar.
The Topix index closed higher after swinging between gains and losses. Technology and bank shares provided the biggest boosts, while the telecommunications and retail groups weighed on the broader market. The yen traded slightly weaker in Asia, after the dollar strengthened overnight as investors awaited U.S. non-farm payroll and jobless figures for August.
Mitsubishi Electric +3.2% after price target raised at Okasan Securities. Sony +0.9%, TDK +0.8%. ANA +2.9% after announcing 70b yen share buyback.
