US Commemorates 50 Years of Apollo 11 Historical Mission to the Moon

Events in Florida and Washington, DC Tuesday (16/7) conference is the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11's historic mission to the moon.

Aerospace Apollo - Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins - drove from Kennedy Space Center in Florida 50 years ago to ride the towering Saturn Lima rocket to begin their journey to the moon.

The Museum of Aerospace and Space in Washington DC, part of the Smithsonian, opened today by opening an exhibition featuring space clothing bought by Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon.

American Vice President Mike Pence led the event, along with NASA Chief Jim Bridenstine and Armstrong's son Rick. Armstrong died in 2012.

Apollo, the actual size of Saturn Lima will be projected on the side of the Washington Monument in Washington's city square, National Mall, Tuesday to Thursday night.

Meanwhile, one of the three surviving Apollo astronauts, Mike Collins, came to the Kennedy Space Center on Tuesday near the location where he and his fellow astronauts were gliding to the moon.
