Australian employment surged in December, led by strong hiring in New South Wales, while the jobless rate ticked up as more people looked for work.
Employment rose 34,700 from November; economists forecast 15,000 gain
Jobless rate climbed to 5.5%; estimate 5.4%
Full-time jobs gained 15,100; part-time employment increased 19,500
Participation rate rose to 65.7%; economists predicted 65.5%
Aussie dollar was little changed at 79.75 U.S. cents at 11:35 a.m. in Sydney
The data cap a bonanza year for the Australian jobs market which saw full-time jobs roar back, starting to soak up some of the slack that™s suppressed wages growth and inflation. The central bank has kept its benchmark interest rate at a record-low 1.5 percent for 17 months to encourage business investment and hiring, showing signs of success; yet debt-laden households struggling with stagnant wages remain a cloud over consumption.
