Japan™s Nikkei fell on Wednesday after the U.S. Federal Reserve chairman pushed back on pressure from President Donald Trump to cut interest rates, but chip-related stocks gained.
The Nikkei share average dropped 0.5% to 21,086.00 points by midmorning.
Investors are also awaiting the outcome of the G20 summit this week, where Trump will talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping on trade.

The monthly Consumer Confidence Survey published by the Conference Board today revealed that the consumer confidence weakened in June with the headline Confidence Index dropping to 121.5 in June from 131.3 in May.
Other data from the U.S. revealed that new home sales in May contracted by 7.8% to fall short of the market expectation for an increase of 1.9%.

Gold's hit pause after surging to a six-year high.
Spot gold fell as much as 1.3% to $1,405.05 an ounce, and traded at $1,407.68 at 11:24 a.m. in Singapore. Prices touched $1,439.21 on Tuesday, the highest since 2013. Holdings in gold-backed ETFs rose for a 10th day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. A gauge of the U.S. dollar ticked up.
